The specter of information overload surrounds everybody these days. This is as true for the business change management professional as it is for the college kids with Internet ready cell telephones. There’s nearly a compulsion in the present day to try and pack more info into less space. Twitter is an excellent example of this phenomenon. The user is provided with 168 characters, including spaces, with which to say something meaningful. This can lead to a bent, even among those that should know better, to seek out sound bite solutions to complicated issues.

There are examples when a sound bite solution works. There are circumstances when a single word can convey a volume of intention. If someone yells Fire! in an overcrowded theater, it communicates considerably more than simply the existence of fire. It’s a warning that there’s a fire. It’s a warning that there is approaching danger. It effectively serves as a command that everyone should leave the theater immediately. However, it only does this because, at some juncture, a major period of time went into explaining why that particular word in that particular instance asserts what it does. This keep it short attitude toward communication is less effective in the world of business change management.

Business change management is a complicated subject. There are volumes on top of volumes that have been written only on this subject. For a sound bite solution to work for a change management consultant, there has to once have been major background with the material of change management. The sound bite solution cannot provide this background. It’s a bit like finding a gold nugget on the way to prospecting. Having the nugget does not mean the person understands the complexities of the prospecting any more than having a sound bite solution means someone understands the idea behind the business change management advice.
