Purchasing A Laptop

by New Article on March 7, 2010

Laptops are becoming more and more popular, and increases in the state of technology mean a half-decent used laptop can be purchased at a reasonable price. But is it worth buying a refurbished laptop when you could buy a desktop computer with the same specifications for far less? This essay will investigate some of the issues that are worth thinking about before spending money on a laptop.

So what kinds of features are offered by a laptop that a desktop computer doesn’t have? Well, obviously, there’s the fact that it’s far easier to move around, and that it can be run wirelessly on batteries for a short while. Apart from that, what is there? Movability is the only real benefit laptops offer, but it is a massive benefit. If you are always on the move especially if using public transport and have to access information outside of the home and office, a laptop can be a superb lifesaver.

Another good thing about using a laptop is that you can plug it in anywhere, making the information it stores far more versatile. If you have a massive amount of data you need to access in-office but have to continue working on at home, a laptop can provide a solution this problem.

You have to think if these kinds of issues come up frequently in the way you currently use your computer. Are you faced with times in which you think, “Gee, I could seriously use a computer at this moment” in everyday life? If this is the case, then getting rid of your old desktop is probably worth it.

But if you aren’t in need of an always moveable PC or Mac, reconsider before you buy yourself one of these machines. They’re far more expensive and don’t run as well for the money you’ll have to pay for them. Consider that the builders of desktop systems have far more space to work with, and aren’t required to create intricate microchips in as tiny a space as they would within the restrictions of a laptop.

Don’t go out and waste a whole lot of extra cash just because buying a laptop seems like the cool thing to do. If you’ve already got a desktop computer at home that you use all the time, it’s probably better to just upgrade this or stick with it, rather than spending a few thousand dollars on a laptop which will just sit around and not get out of the house.

If you’re committed to buying a laptop, the next thing you’ll have to do is think about whether you need a Mac or a PC. These both have positive and negative points to them. A Mac is usually a more versatile machine and can more easily connect with other computers, but business programs and computer games are often created to work only on a PC system. Decide what you will be using your computer for and the type of operating system which would work the best for you. Don’t be afraid to ask around to get yourself the most valuable deal, as it could save you hundreds.
