Chicago’s Translation Companies in the 1800′s

For centuries, immigrants have played an important role in the histories of many cities like Baltimore, Boston and Chicago. These groups brought with them their native languages, which added to the identities of the cities.

By the end of the 1800s, many people believed Baltimore was by far the most important American city for immigration. Much like other east coast cities, Baltimore was a very international city at the time. Nearly as many residents of Baltimore spoke German as their first language as those who spoke English as their first language. Chinese, French and Italian became increasingly popular, and by the time of the Civil War, the Chinese were one of the largest immigrant groups in the United States. Chinese immigrants were originally recruited to build railroads, and Chinatowns sprung up in cities all over the country. Baltimore was no different, with Chinese restaurants, laundries and other businesses developing in the area. This growth in ethnic enclaves brought about the need for Baltimore Translation Services. Unlike most other American cities, Baltimore was considered a relatively welcoming place for the Chinese and other immigrant groups. Therefore, Baltimore became a major center for Baltimore translators of all languages. Boston, much like Baltimore, is also a port of entry for immigrants to the United States. The city of Boston parallels Baltimore since it has also encouraged immigrants to settle there throughout its history.

Boston has been one of the major centers of Russian and East European immigration, attracting new arrivals by location, similarities to European cities, and world-renowned universities. The United States Census Bureau reports that Russians are among the largest ethnic groups in Boston. The growth in these populations has opened up many jobs in the area of Boston Translator which specialize in Russian and Eastern European languages. The suburbs of Chelsea and Brookline are home to a large number of translation services, each specializing in its own class of languages.

Chicago is a major midwestern city, but it shares characteristics with east coast cities like Boston and Baltimore. As a gateway city, Chicago was first settled by speakers of the French language. Immigrants to the Chicago area came mainly during the 1840s and 1850s. As Europeans were fleeing famine in Europe, Chicago was accepting them as new inhabitants of their city. The need for Chicago translators increased tremendously because more than half the population of the city was foreign-born during the mid-1800s. At the end of the 1800s more than 80 percent of the population of Chicago were born in Europe. Dutch translators, German translators and French translators were popping up everywhere, but translation services in other languages like Chinese were also popular. During the period from 1924 to 1965, when U.S. immigration was stopped with the exception of refugees, Chicago’s ethnic groups consolidated their neighborhoods and increased in number. Beginning in 1945, there was also a huge wave of Japanese immigrants to Chicago. These were typically former prisoners in internment camps in California. This sudden increase in the Japanese population of Chicago brought with it the demand for Japanese translation services, and Chicago Translation companies were able to accommodate that demand.
