The most obvious point when living in an apartment building is the sheer number of people housed within one building. The most glaring problem in this day and age, is how does the building manage its waste and recycling responsibilities. Newly built apartments tend to have these facilities, or an easier use built in within the design, but a turn of the century design can lead to problems when it comes to waste disposal habits
This does seem like a trivial situation, waste management but in a densely populated area of apartments and people, rodents are just waiting for a chance to capitalize on the situation. While there are many ways to tackle waste management problems, there are a few simple ways to encourage good waste disposal habits in your building. The first thing you should do is inform every tenant in your building of the garbage pickup schedule. This helps your apartment dwellers time their garbage disposal accurately, which reduces the amount of time that garbage remains outside of the building.
The easiest way to inform your apartment dwellers of the schedule is printing out a clear, legible copy of the schedule and posting it on the front door of the building. If you want to take a more personal approach to ensure they’re well-informed of the schedule, try sending it in an e-mail or written letter. Making sure your tenants are fully aware of the garbage pickup schedule is extremely crucial in developing good disposal habits and reducing the buildup of waste outside the building.
Recycling is another big part of waste management that shouldn’t be neglected. Getting your tenants to partake in recycling can be difficult, which is why you should take the initiative and offer them assistance. A personal approach always works best if you would like your neighbors within an apartment to recycle a bit more efficiently; visit each tenant with a pamphlet explaining how recycling works. Take this a step further, each tenant should be provided with their own allocated wheelie bin, this is space dependant of course, if the space is not available, then perhaps one large flat top wheelie bin.
By being informative and helpful, you can motivate your tenants to start recycling. Low-quality waste containers are a big contributor to bad waste management habits. If tenants have to contend with placing rubbish into waste bins, that are not up to the job anymore then it will never be a neat an orderly situation. Inadequate rubbish bins are more likely to lose their lids, just wait for a windy day, topple over and spill their contents, a recipe for a happy rodent.
Buying trash cans with chained lids will ensure that the garbage area outside your apartment is kept tidy. Although these chained trash cans can get the job done, the wheelie bin is definitely a better choice. There are a large variety of wheelie bins available to consumers, so researching them is necessary in order to make sure you’re getting bins that suit your needs. The main difference between them is size, so try getting wheelie bins that are the same size as your current garbage cans.
There are industrial-sized wheelie bins that are quite large, but having one of these is unnecessary, unless you’re managing the garbage disposal of a massive apartment complex. The old school garbage cans lead to a bit of an eye sore and space wasting, the newer wheelie bins are uniform and stack tightly together, to prevent a free for all; this includes the recycle cans.
